Language Arts

The Montessori Language Curriculum fosters reading and writing skills through a developmental approach that begins with pre-writing and pre-reading activities. Early readiness for writing is supported through Practical Life exercises and tracing metal insets, which develop fine motor skills. Children then engage with sandpaper letters, a tactile method for learning letter formation, which strengthens their muscle memory and visual recognition. The Moveable Alphabet allows children to create their own words, with color-coded vowels (blue) and consonants (red) helping to distinguish between sounds and simplify word building. This system helps children understand basic language structure, such as the importance of including at least one vowel in each word. Sight words are introduced visually in black to support recognition, distinguishing them from regular phonetic words. Formal reading instruction progresses from simple readers to workbooks and story writing, promoting a hands-on, sensory-driven path to literacy that aligns with each child's natural developmental pace. Through these multi-sensory methods, the Montessori approach creates a strong foundation for both reading and writing.
